COMMON INSURANCE
QUESTIONS
With some of
Australia's largest sporting organisations insured through IEA, the
IEA Sports Team is in regular contact with all levels of sport
administration. Here's a couple of questions which are common
across Australia....
Q. Our
Club uses the grounds owned by the Local Council. We are
required to provide proof of Public Liability Insurance to the Local Council,
with them named as an interested party. Is there a way for us
to satisfy the Council requirements at a reduced cost to the club?
A. One of
the easiest and most economical ways for clubs to obtain appropriate
liability protection and to satisfy Council or land owners
requirements is to arrange public liability coverage tailored to sport
through your State or National Sporting Organisation. This cover
can be extended to include all affiliated bodies. In simple
terms this means that each affiliated club or association receives
liability protection appropriate for sporting bodies and which meets
statutory requirements. The cost incurred by clubs in buying a
separate policy is removed. Copies of the policy document, with
the required insured name, can be forwarded upon request to the
affiliated clubs.
Q. Our Club Executive has been thinking about Directors
& Officer's Liability Insurance but are concerned about the
costs. What are our options?

A. One of the realities of sport in today's litigious
society is the increased risk of legal action being taken against
officers and directors of clubs and organisations. Whether your
Club is an incorporated entity or not has little effect on your legal
responsibility to members. Comprehensive Directors &
Officers Liability Insurance can be arranged under your State or
National Sporting Organisation, or a separate policy can be written
for your club.
