JOBS IN SPORT - WHERE TO LOOK

With 60% of jobs now filled by referral, head hunting or internal promotions, the way to look for work in the burgeoning sport & recreation sector has changed significantly in recent years.

Here's some useful tips for candidates looking for new career opportunities...

  1. Major Metropolitan newspapers are still a good place to look for advertised jobs.  The Weekend Australian and the Financial Review are becoming increasingly popular for the higher profile jobs.  Don't confine your search to the Sport pages - there's lots of great jobs in early general news and the general classified section.  Also, take a look at the Tenders section as you'll be able to keep track on new developments and potential job opportunities.
  2.  If you have access to the Web, take a look at the Fairfax and News sites for a complete listing of jobs.  These Web sites offer job hunters the options to search by newspaper(s), region(s) and category.  You can read the job advertisement, including display ads., from newspapers across Australia or tailor your search to your preferred City.

Here's an example of how you search for a job on the Web using the Fairfax service...

Go to the address http://market.fairfax.com.au/

The home page will come up on the screen giving you options including jobs, motor vehicles, properties & businesses, traders & auctions and tenders.  Click on the "jobs" icon to open the employment home page.

Once the jobs home page is open, you'll be asked to select category of jobs - by selecting "All" you'll be able to look at the broadest range of positions available.

You'll then be asked to select publications - click on your preferred publication(s) or choose "All".  Then type in your key word search - type "sport" or a more defined search, e.g. "sport coaching".  By changing the search parameters you can create a new search.  The search results will list all the positions found under your definitions - you can even print out the job advertisements!

The News site is located at http://www.newsclassifieds.com.au/ and is very similar to the Fairfax site, with simple to follow instructions.

By using one of the Web search engines, you can even pick up listings of international job sites!

  1. While real estate's golden rules are "location, location, location" it could be said in sport it's all about "network, network, network!"  With  so many jobs filled without advertising, it's often who you know that's important in career progression.  Use your contacts wisely by telling them you'd be interested in a position if an opportunity arises.
