ACTION PLANNED FOR SPORTS INDUSTRY

One of the key recommendations in A Whole New Ball Game - the sport policy document of Sport Industry Australia, was the development of a sport industry action plan.  The plan would be developed as a partnership between government and the industry - both the business and not-for-profit sectors.

Late last year the Federal Minister for Sport and Tourism, Jackie Kelly announced her intention to take up the recommendation.  And recently she announced the appointment of David Morgan as Chair of the Sport and Recreation Industry Consultative Group that would oversee the development of the sport industry action plan.  It will be known as the Strategic National Plan for Sport and Recreation.

David Morgan is a wise choice.  He is the recently retired President of the Ford Motor Company and is the Chairman of the Sports Export Advisory Council and Australian Sports International.  His experience will enable him to play a major role in strengthening linkages between the sports industry and government, which are vital if there is to be an innovative and economically sustainable sport and recreation industry.

The Sport and Recreation Industry Consultative Group will play a key role in developing the action plan.  It has members from around Australia drawn from a cross-section of the industries including Sport Industry Australia.

Minister Kelly has summed up the importance of the action plan.
"In addition to Australia's achievements on the world's sporting fields, the Government is looking to the industries which underpin Australian sport and recreation to become innovators and play a bigger role in world markets".

It is vital in this age of innovation and globalisation that the Government's sources of advice are broad ranging and include the very best people from within the industry and the wider community.

The key issues that the Industry Consultative Group will address in preparing the plan include developing new export markets, expanding the domestic market, industry linkages and leadership, innovation and  R&D and issues affecting business competitiveness.

That is why Sport Industry Australia is positioning itself as the industry leader.

During the next twelve months it will endeavour to strike productive alliances with major representative groups including ACCI. the AMA, the Tourism Task Force, ACOSS and the National Farmers Federation.  The time is right to once and for all position sport as a top Australian industry.  It is already positioned in the top thirty; We must aim to push it in the top twenty during the next five years.

But we must never lose sight of three major facts.  The sport industry thrives on millions of Australian sport participants, 1.6 million volunteers and a successful sports system lead by hard working national sporting organisations.

Neglect those three facts and the risk is market failure - before the industry has ever had a chance.
