Jobs in Sport-Trends

Whether we're happy in our job or not, most of us try to keep an eye on what jobs are on offer, who's moving on and who's moving in!

According to recent figures released by MCM Sportspeople there has been a small positive shift in employment in the sports & recreation market over the last six months.  Using job advertisements placed in the Weekend Australian and Saturday editions of the Sydney Morning Herald, MCM Sportspeople has noted 248 jobs over the six months, ending May 31, 1997.

This figure compares favourably with 184 jobs for the June-November, 1996 period and takes into account the general slowing down of the market over the Xmas & New Year period.  The total number of positions advertised over the twelve month period, June 1, 1996-May 31, 1997 totalled 432.

So where are the jobs in Sport & Recreation? Here's some of the more interesting trends over the past six months....

  • SOCOG continues to dominate the market with over 40 positions advertised, followed by Government (31), Institute(s) of Sport (25), and facility management (18).
  • Apart from the direct positions on offer by SOCOG, six (6) positions were advertised by Olympic partners and over 20% of the jobs on offer through National Sporting Organisations had an Olympic link (ie. High Performance Managers).

  • 89 jobs were advertised by Sporting Organisations with Rugby League (8) leading the way, followed by Tennis (6), Rowing (6), Basketball (5), Australian Football (4) and Cricket (4).
  • Fitness leaders were in high demand with twenty five (25) jobs on offer
  • Positions for specialists in Sports Marketing, Sponsorship and Event Management accounted for sixteen (16) jobs.
  • Of the 248 Positions, 233 were full time and 15 part time/casual.

Once again, candidates with marketing skills were in high demand with 53% of the total number of jobs offered citing marketing experience as a selection criteria.  This trend has jumped from 30% in the last survey period, demonstrating the importance placed on communication, sponsorship development & sponsorship servicing in the sport and recreation market.
