- 167 (132) positions
were advertised by mainstream Sporting Organisations, with AFL,
Golf and Rugby Union leading the way. This increase in the
general sport market is encouraging, demonstrating the employment
base outside the Olympic market remains reasonably strong.
- Sales and marketing
personnel continue to be in high demand with 76 (53) positions
advertised, representing 11.7% of the total number of positions
advertised. Marketing skills and/or background was noted as
a selection criteria in 52%(55%) of positions advertised.
While a slight reduction on 1998, this trend reinforces the
importance the market continues to place on candidates with strong
sponsorship development and servicing backgrounds.
- While the 1999
Sportspeople Report represents the best available measurement of
employment activity for the sports market, it is by no means an
absolute measure of the total number of positions filled in
1999. The sports market is characterised, like many other
industry sectors, by a trend to fill many positions through
internal promotion, networking, referrals or targeted
selection. It is estimated up to 60% of positions available
in sport are filled without advertising.
- Given positions are
advertised in other major city media, Sportpeople has estimated
the number of sport sector positions advertised in Australia in
1998/99 was between 1300-1625.
